Can ;a USB chargiing cable be connected but bad?

I found a locked iphone and I'm trying to return it to the owner.

Maybe he will call me, but the battery was at 30% and now it's at 22%.
That's only 8% in 11 hours, but still, in 33 hours it will be dead as a
doornail. And I don't want to turn the phone off because he, or someoen
who knows him, might call. If I turn it off now, can I turn it on
tomorrow even though I can't unlock it? When it was at 27%, I borrowed
a cable to charge it

1) Most important: When plugged in, it says roughly, "Accessory
connected. Unlock phone to use accessory", but it didn't show that it
was charging. The icon in the upper right continues to show a percent
but no lighting bolt and no greenness. What's going on? All I can
imagine is that the cable is no good, but my neighbor says he keeps it
in the basement to use there. He's not stupid.

A friend tells me there are 3 kinds of cable plug, USB-C, Flying Harpie,
and a third one, but I thought there were only 2 kinds. This is NOT
USB-C. Is there a 3rd kind?

2) Unlikely? The USB port is normally used for an external
microphone/speaker, I only use the mike to speak search terms to
google, but it works for that. I've tried two adjacent ports. do I
have to try the other 2 front ports?


3) Somewhat less important: How do I tell if it's an iphone 5, 6, 87,
whatever? Knowing that would enable to understand webpages. For
example, one or two say I can find the owner by pressign the home button
or the side button and saying Siri, who's the owner. But other pages
say the home button doesn't exist on all phones. BTW< I tried the side
key and it didnt' work, and it says that people are advised to turn Siri
off when the phone is locked, and that's probably what he did. Still
there are many other reasons to know what model the phone is.

When you find something, you're meant to take it to the appropriate
place - the shop / business that owns the carpark, the nearest police
station, etc. You're not meant to take it home with you.

place - the shop / business that owns the carpark, the nearest police
station, etc. You're not meant to take it home with you.

iPhone's are set up to allow people to help others recover their goods.

Once "reached" the handover can be in a safe place (public, near a
police station, for example).

woman charging her phone with a charger, from a strip that didn't have
usb ports, and I said to myself, Remember to put an AC charger in the
car. But I still didn't think of it.

should I hunt for a smaller one.

My son found it but didn't tell me until we had left, I called the store
whose parking lot it was and told them I had it and gave them my phone
number. I did this before with an airpod in front of supermarket,
absolutely had to leave immediately, and within 4 hours the owner had
called the store, called me, and come over to get it. Later a second
person called but the details didn't match up and I'm sure I gave it to
the right noe.

But you're wrong. I would not be guilty of theft. Maybe intentions
don't make the difference but actions do. "If you find lost property
and don't take reasonable steps to return it to the owner, it could be
considered theft. However, if you can show that you took reasonable
steps to find the owner, you may be able to establish that you didn't
intend to permanently deprive the owner of the property"

I have no use for a locked Iphone, In addition to my calling the store,
one person called the phone about 5PM and I told him I had the phone and
he should notify his friend and give him my phone number, and 15 minutes
later, I saw in the notifications that he had emailed her. I expect
she'll call my phone if she ever reads her email, but if she calls her
phone, I want it to be working.

Yes, google said that was okay even for older** iphones, and it's
charging. (Although on the lock screen there is only a tiny lightning
bolt and there is no green. I hope I didn't miss the little lighning
bolt when charging from the desktop PC. OTOH, when you swipe the upper
right corner down, it shows green and a clearly legible ligtning bolt.)

** (Though I have no idea how old this is. It doesn't use USB-C and a
friend says that means it not a new model, that they've all used USB-C
for a few years now, or the third kind of plug whose name she could not
remember. Is there a third kind?)

You can safely charge any device with a USB charge cable with any USB
power adapter (assuming the cable and power adapter aren't cheap
knockoff devices that don’t actually meet USB specifications, and they
aren't defective).

The letter “U” in “USB” stands for “Universal”. The USB specification is
designed so that the device and USB power adapter will automatically
negotiate the power level that is appropriate for the device being
charged.

Only iPhone 15 and above use USB-C connectors. What you have is likely
older than that and hence it uses a Lightning cable. They are available at
gas stations and anywhere else.

Only iPhone 15 and above use USB-C connectors. What you have is likely

I didn't want to buy one for only a day or two. I do like having
things I haven't needed but might, but that usually happens when
sets/multiple items are for sale together, or at yard sales.

are not worth much anymore unless you have a very old phone.

and he was much more alert than the first caller. He knows her other
phone number, called her and she called me. She has two phones, didn't
even know she'd lost one, and couldn't figure out where she lost it. She
went to that drugstore just to pick up an Amazon package, but used her
other phone, thought that phone was left at home.

(So she was not going to go to the police, and she already had no idea
where she lost it. When she found it missing, she'd have even less
idea. So i think I handled this correctly. She hasn't seen the email
the guy sent her yesterday.)

She's coming over in a little while on her way home. Since she called me
on the phone, she says her name is Sandra and the two other callers were
looking for Sandra, I don't feel the need for more proof that it's right
match, like I did for the earpod. Maybe I'll make her unlock it.

She has two phones. She didn't even know this one was missing. She was
very polite and appreciative.

From my side, one webpage suggest turning in Siri and asking Whose phone
is this. ButI tried a lot of buttons and couldn't get it to work. Then
I read tha thS users are adviced to turn off Siri when using the lock
screen. I asked her if she'd done t hat and she said she'd never used
Siri. ;-)

(So she was not going to go to the police, and she already had no idea
where she lost it. When she found it missing, she'd have even less
idea. So i think I handled this correctly. She hasn't seen the email
the guy sent her yesterday.)
She's coming over in a little while on her way home. Since she called me
on the phone, she says her name is Sandra and the two other callers were
looking for Sandra, I don't feel the need for more proof that it's right
match, like I did for the earpod. Maybe I'll make her unlock it.

iPhones have FindMy which allows you to find your phone by logging into
your iCloud account. I’m surprised they didn’t use that to track it down.

She has two phones. She didn't even know this one was missing. She was
very polite and appreciative.
From my side, one webpage suggest turning in Siri and asking Whose phone
is this. ButI tried a lot of buttons and couldn't get it to work. Then
I read tha thS users are adviced to turn off Siri when using the lock
screen. I asked her if she'd done t hat and she said she'd never used
Siri. ;-)

I’ll bet you she’s used Facebook and TikTok on that phone countless times
though…

other phone number, called her and she called me. She has two phones,
didn't even know she'd lost one, and couldn't figure out where she
lost it. She went to that drugstore just to pick up an Amazon package,
but used her other phone, thought that phone was left at home.

Hard for me to fathom purchasing two expensive electronic devices,
losing one, and not even being aware of it.

I have a terrible memory for numbers, but I asked her which model it was
just as she was leaving. Because the instructions on how to do things
varied by the model. I think it was I-7 or 9 at most, so I guess that
makes it her earlier phone , although of course both had sims.
