Post by nospamPost by markPost by nospamconsider getting a more recent ipad, because very few apps will
work on something that old.
App store search will find apps and give me a grey get button which
turns green saying install app but then every app I tried to install
said "this app is incompatibel with this ipad."
that's because it requires a newer version of ios than what your ipad
can run.
some developers will offer older versions of their app for those not
running the latest ios version (currently ios 15), which the app store
will automatically offer.

however, it's *extremely* unlikely that app developers will offer apps
for ios 5. usually it's only a couple of versions prior.
this choice is up to the developer. if an older version is not
offered, then there's nothing you can do, other than find another app.
there may be some older apps in the app store that haven't been
updated in years and never removed, which may still work, assuming you
can still download them.
Yep. For this reason, we archive all of our iOS apps indefinitely, so we
can install any old versions we want - even if they've been replaced or
removed from the App Store.
One app that has been updated and still supports this iPad (I know
because we still have ours) is Catan Classic HD (the iPad version of the
Settlers of Catan board game):

It's a great way to play without having to set up a physical board that
dominates a table top. ; )
Aside from a handful of other games, this is our primary use of our old,
trusty (crusty?) 1st Generation iPad. : )
Post by nospamthe other problem is that even if you do find apps that can be
downloaded and will run, if they connect to a server, as many of them
do, they still may not work since the protocols and necessary security
patches will likely have changed. that also assumes the servers still
exist, which is not likely for apps that haven't otherwise been
updated in ten years.
tl;dr -, don't plan on using very many apps, if any.
Yep. You can forget most social media apps, such as YouTube.
Post by nospamPost by markWhen I factory wipe it can I at least get the original apps to work?
Youtube, safari, messages, notes, maps, calendar, music, photos, & mail?
anything that came with the original ipad will work, subject to the
limitations described above.
many web sites will require a browser more recent than the version of
safari that came with it.
beyond that, don't expect much.
Web browsing is way too slow to be useful anyway, and most websites have
long been updated with code that simply won't run well (if at all) in
browsers that old. And doing just about anything else is painfully slow.
But playing the handful of games we have on it works great. : )
